7 things that I miss about Chennai

C.H.E.N.N.A.I, what can I say about this place!! It has been my home for more than 15 years and since I am away from Chennai for the past 2 years, I know what it feels like and the things that I miss about Chennai. Mark my words, you cannot find a better city than Chennai anywhere in the world. And you will realize it only when you are staying away from it.

~Which is the best tagline for Chennai? - Check out here~

Chennai, formerly known as Madras is the capital of Tamilnadu. It is the biggest economical, cultural and education centre of South-india. Here is the list of 7 things that I miss about Chennai:

  1. Movies:

Hollywood, Kollywood, Bollywood, Tollywood, anything for that matter, it is just Rs. 120/- per head on any day and any show. Where else in the world can you find tickets that are this cheap and have great quality multiplexes like Sathyam, Inox, PVR, Jazz, Palazzo and also small theatres, which are rich in content like Udhayam, Devi, Kasi, Kamala, etc., For this rate, the people of  Chennai get to watch movies with AURO 3D, Dolby Atmos, RDX, HFR, IMAX, etc., It is heaven on earth for any of the movie fanatics out there, the experience is unparalleled. On the other hand, when you come out of Chennai, you need to pay around Rs.500 - 1500/- per head to watch and enjoy your favourite movie and the price varies depending on the movie, release date, actors, etc.,

  2. Food:

Idly, Dosa, Pongal, Vada, Biryani, Chicken 65, Brain fry, Fish fry, Chicken fried rice, chilli beef, mutton soup, atho, baijo, chettinad chicken and many more till you drool to death. Any food, any cuisine you name it and you will find the best version of it in Chennai. Chennai is the paradise for all the foodies. You can find 5 star restaurants, hotels, road side shops, tea shops, briyani stalls, paani-poori stalls, etc., From kaiyendhi bhavan till saravana bhavan, from road side briyani stall till Dindugal thalapakatti restaurants, you have everything that you need.
  3. Local trains:

Where else in the world can you travel 20kms for just Rs.5/- The local sub-urban trains, MRTS and Chennai Metro are the things which make Chennai to stand out from the rest of the crowd. When you are travelling in the local trains, standing near the door and the breeze that hits on your face, that is what I am talking about. It is much better than travelling in AC buses and trams in other parts of the world.

  4. Politics:

Ah!! How can you forget the politics! The political gatherings, false promises, banners, posters, stickers, cut-outs. If you are a true chenniate, then politics would have integrated into your blood. It doesn't mean that, you should support a Party and defend for it, but rather you can also be a curious spectator and be true to yourself. There is a funny statement that, 'If you do not find a political banner or poster for every 100 meters, then you are not in Chennai!', and it is sadly true. ADMK and DMK have been all over Tamilnadu, especially in Chennai for the past 50 years. You can find 'Amma' or 'Karunanidhi's' photo in the form of poster, notice sheets, billboards on the lamp posts, tea shops, walls, newspaper, sometimes on your house too (pun intended).

  5. Legends:

Ilayaraja, A.R.R, Mani ratnam, Vishwanathan Anand, Rajnikanth, Kamal Hassan, Sundar Pichai to name a few. There is some very special about this place, it creates and nourishes legends, who scale to great heights.

  6. Beasant nagar beach:

Perfect weekend starts with, Early morning sun-rise, jogging, playing cricket, breakfast at Murugan Idli shop. Evening walk, cool breeze, 'sundal', fresh fish fry, dinner at Thalapakatti. Enough said!!!

  7. Shopping:

Lee cooper, Peter England, Basics, Levis, Jack & Jones till 3 t-shirts for Rs.100/-. You have everything that you desire. The one destination to satisfy your fashion needs, T.Nagar!! It is not the only place in Chennai, you can all these shops at various different places too, but they all assemble in this one small street in T.Nagar, Ranganathan street. You can find also find zillion jewellery shops and billion textile shops in one small street. That is what Chennai is all about.
'Vanakam, Vaazha vaikum Chennai' - which means that, 'Welcome, Chennai will help you to live your life'. This city has made rag-pickers as Millionaires, has given a new life to numerous people and been there for each and everyone who comes to Chennai. This city offers you everything, with nothing in return. With such a low-cost of living and all facilities, there is no such city in the world which offers so much for so less.

There are no words to say about the unity and humanity that this city had shown during the infamous 'Chennai floods'. There were no rich people, no poor people, everyone were equal and helped each other. Chennai doesn't have native people like how other cities and towns have, but Chennai has been there for people who came to enhance their lives and now those same people are the so-called Natives of Chennai. Even though I was not there during those tough times, my heart is always there. To conclude, Chennai has been inspiration to lot of people, including me. The undying love for this wonderful city will never stop and I hope to return as soon as possible.
